See You at the Pole Day

Today, all across the world, school age children celebrated See You at the Pole day. See You at the Pole day is a day reserved for students and faculty members to meet at the flagpole in front of the school and pray. The students pray for their school, classmates, family, and whatever else moves them.

This day is honored on the fourth Wednesday every September.

The day began in 1990 in Texas when a group of students were taking part in a DiscipleNow weekend. The students were so moved by Gods word that they felt the need to pray. Not knowing how to handle their emotions or where to take the prayer, the students went to three different schools and prayed around the flagpoles.

The idea spread throughout Texas and into the hearts of other students. On September 12, 1990 a plan was designed for students to meet at the flagpole of their schools at 7:00 AM. Forty-five thousand students in four different states met at the flagpoles of their schools.

One year later, September 11, 1991, one million students from all across the country met at their schools’ flagpoles. Some of the schools read Bible verses and some simply prayed.

Today, over 20 countries take part in the See You at the Pole day. Often, one will see the day’s name shortened to SYATP.

See You at the Pole is completely lead by students. Usually a student organization such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is in charge. It is not meant to be a demonstration against anything or a march or protest. It is a time to worship and pray. With prayer being taken out of schools, this is an attempt for students to show their faith in God.

The meeting is planned to be on the fourth Wednesday of September at 7:00 AM. However, some schools choose an earlier or later time due to their schedule.
