Have you seen the Mormon Messages that appear on the LDS.org web site and on YouTube? I have recently become a fan of these short messages that are so uplifting, spiritually helpful, and well done. And they’re only a couple of minutes each, so it’s easy to fit one into your day. Don’t you love the Internet for the cool things it makes possible?
Today I watched one entitled Seek the Higher Ground. In it, Elder Cook talks about how our lives can be enriched and we can do all the Lord needs us to do when we seek higher ground. He begins by recounting some of the natural disasters that have recently occurred around the world—specifically the tsunami in Samoa.
When the waves were coming, the people only had limited warnings and had to immediately run for higher ground to avoid being swept into the sea. There was no time for second-guessing or making other choices. There was no time to prepare for a tsunami at that point. The only thing that would save them was to get to a higher elevation.
I have had a bad experience with water’s power, and I know that being there would have terrified me. But the lesson comes not in the terror but in the knowledge that simply by going to higher ground, we can be saved. I’m sure that every child on the island knows that lesson in a physical sense. But how many of us apply it spiritually?
Elder Cook continues by talking about how we need to live and operate on a spiritual high ground so that we can help and lift one another. We all face trials. We all have things we would rather not deal with in life, but it’s how we deal with these unbearable circumstances that sets us apart. It’s the choices we make in the hardest moments that define who we really are.
We can take the low paths where the water and the world can get at us, or we can choose to seek the higher ground and live closer to the Savior.
