Selecting a Caterer

There’s an anonymous saying that goes: “You know you are getting old when you tell a friend you are having an affair and he or she asks you who is catering it. Finding a good caterer, however, is no laughing matter and can only come about after a little “spadework.”

Network. Ask your friends, relatives and coworkers. Word of mouth is always the best reference for anything and that includes caterers. Check also with local florists, party rental suppliers and bridal shops. They would know about caterers, and if the experience was bad, they will surely not hesitate to spread the ugly truth. Pay attention to any affairs you attend. If you like the way the buffet looks, request the caterer’s business card (and don’t get any sauce on it).

When speaking to a caterer you are thinking of hiring, look for a track record. Ask how long they have been in business. A fly-by-night operation might be cheap and even snazzy, but you want to avoid that because of where the flies might congregate by day. I don’t like them but sometimes the Yellow Pages can be very helpful. I say this because I prefer personal references, but a well-designed ad can be an indication of style and good taste. An ad will indicate the extent of offered services, including furnishings, tableware, flowers and entertainment.

No matter which source you use, make sure you get a cost-per-person estimate. Tell the candidates exactly what you have in mind and what you need in the way of goods and services. Ask for references and when you check them out make sure to inquire whether they would use that particular caterer again. Get everything, including the menu and the number of services IN WRITING.

The right caterer may be hard to find, but once you do, you can relax and have a good time at your own party.
