While we tend to think about January as the time to make resolution and start new things, I say that September is an even better month for improvements and new processes that will make your home run more efficiently and happily.
Why? Well, you have the combination of a big transition from summer to school, plus the crisp fall weather that can energize you and remind you that winter is coming–better get yourself in gear.
It is still warm enough to do things outdoors, but bracing enough to give you the motivation to get your house in order inside.
Consider putting some of the following ideas in place during this month and into October.
Create a Family Nerve Center
Whether it is as simple as a new calendar for everyone’s activities (I got mine for pennies at the Borders close out sale) and a large envelope, or a designated area with shelves, a bulletin board and a table or desk with drawers, have a place where everyone can go to keep organized.
School and sports notices, paperwork to be signed, events to be placed on the calendar, all can go in the nerve center.
Get Rid of the Old
Let us face it, most of us have a ton of things in our home that are serving no useful purpose. From broken toys to unflattering clothes, free your space and your mind of excess clutter.
Face the fact that you probably won’t get things repaired, lose or gain weight or figure out a new use for something old. Toss it and donate it, and free your household for the things that are truly important and enjoyed.
Simplify the Landscaping
Do you dread having to mow the grass or weed the exotic plants? Are your walkway pavers driving you nuts? Is it too dark to see your way to your front door at night? Before the shorter days leave you with little daylight, take the opportunity to simplify your landscaping and simplify your life.
Make a list of what you like and dislike about you current landscaping and then make some changes. There is no need to keep things the way that they have always been.
