September is National Yoga Month. This is an awareness campaign that is designed to increase awareness of the physical, spiritual and mental benefits of yoga. If you’ve been thinking of trying yoga or used to practice, but haven’t kept up with it, this is a great month to return to the mat.
The designation of this first National Yoga Month was made by the Department of Health and Human Services to increase awareness of the multitude of health benefits of yoga practice. The DHS isn’t alone; a growing number of doctors are recommending their patients add a yoga practice to their fitness routine.
There are events planned across the country and more information can be found at yogamonth.org. One event that is happening around the country is a free yoga week, offered by participating studios. This is the perfect way to experience yoga before making an investment in a membership.
You can find information on the free yoga week on the Yoga Month website. Over 800 studios have donated a free week of yoga and the list continues to grow. Click on the free week icon and use the online tool to find studios offering a free week of yoga in your area. You can print a card after you register to take along to the studio.
Yoga celebrations have been organized in cities throughout the country. Many offer free yoga events and practices, workshops and classes in parks or other areas. Some events have speakers, music and dance performances as well. To find more, check out the website, as well as ads in your newspaper to find events sponsored by local yoga groups.
Also check with your local yoga studios. Many are offering membership specials in honor of National Yoga Month and some may be having events that haven’t been listed on the website or know of events in your area.
