Serious Summer Fun

The calendar may still say spring, but with most of the country experiencing temperatures in the 80s and 90s, summer fever is already in full swing. It’s almost time for students to trade in their books for the beach, and for parents to start planning for the clan’s annual summer getaway.

If you are looking for activities that will delight the entire family in the coming weeks, consider the following:

GREAT AMERICAN FOOD AND MUSIC FEST

This annual one-day event has something for everyone. Foodies will be in heaven sampling everything from authentic buffalo wings from Anchor Bar in Buffalo to fresh cheesesteak sandwiches from legendary Tony Luke’s in Philly. That’s on top of the thousands of pounds of pastrami and pickles being flown in for the event from Katz’s Deli in Manhattan and the hundreds of hot dogs arriving from Pink’s in Hollywood.

The popular event takes place June 13, from noon-10 p.m. at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, in Mountain View, California, about 35 miles from San Francisco.

In addition to the mouth-watering culinary creations being offered, celebrity chefs from around the world will also be on hand. Among the experts holding demonstrations will be Bobby Flay and Anne Burrell, Mario Batali’s former chief lieutenant on Iron Chef and star of Secrets of a Restaurant Chef.

To get the crowd groovin’, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Little Feat and Marshall Crenshaw will be performing live all day.

Tickets start at $35, and this year guests will get the first plate of food for free from a vendor of their choice.

GREAT PIGGY BANK ADVENTURE

Meanwhile, across the country in Florida, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando is giving families another reason to visit.

In an effort to teach children about money during these rocky financial times, the house of mouse is opening a new attraction just for kids. The Great Piggy Bank Adventure at Epcot will provide families the opportunity to learn about financial values by playing hands-on games that encourage saving money.
