Yesterday I wrote about different ways that we can serve our families. Today I want to focus on ways which we can serve our friends. I think an important part of serving others is to shine as a light in this dark world. We can show Christ to our family, friends, and even strangers when we serve them, especially in unexpected ways.
Generally I think that being a friend to someone means that you do serve them in some ways. Friends are usually very willing to help out when the need arises, but there are times we can serve our friends even when they do not need any help.
Below I have listed a few ways we can serve our friends.
- Offer to baby-sit their children so they can have a date night with their spouse. I am sure they would appreciate it, and maybe they will even return the service!
- When your friends have a long to-do list, offer to split some of the errands with them. Or, offer to go with them to help run the errands more quickly.
- Offer to watch their home, to take care of their pets, and to check their mail when they are going out of town. While you might already do these things because you are their friend, taking the initiative and volunteering often means a lot.
- Help them out when they are sick or struggling. Bring them meals, offer to watch their children, and encourage them through your conversation and actions. Some people are brought to the Lord when they see how willing Christians are to help in times of need.
- Invite them to do a Bible study or come to service with you. While this may not seem like the typical example of being a servant, think of what a wonderful servant of God you are being by sharing Christ with them.
