For many people who work at home flexibility is often times a perk. That’s not the case for every work-at-home job but for many it is. Sometimes that flexibility can work against you. Part of being successful at a home business is to be disciplined.
One way that you can be disciplined is to set work hours and develop a schedule. There are a lot of benefits to doing this. First, consider work hours. Work hours will help you establish a set time to complete what needs to be done.
Sure I would love to sleep in everyday until 10:00 since its summertime and my children are off from school. I could do it but then the late start on my day would mean working into the late afternoon. That cuts into my time when I could be doing something fun with my family.
Although it is summer and I could be sleeping in, what works best for me and my family is to still get up at 6 a.m. so I can start working early. On a good day, my work time begins at 7:30 a.m.
For other people their work time might be when their children are napping or it may be late into the night. The important thing isn’t when it happens but that you discipline yourself with work hours. Granted there may be days when it doesn’t happen. With the flexibility of my work I can sometimes change things up. However I try to most days stick to my work hours.
Second, consider setting up a schedule. A schedule can help you stay on track and prioritize things. Working as a freelance writer for web content, I receive a set amount of work each week. I have one week to complete it. I know that in order to do my work well and be successful, I have to devise a schedule. Every weekend I lay out that week’s work and write down everything that needs to be done each day.
It is such a gratifying feeling to cross things off my list. Sometimes I get ahead and can start working on the next day’s assignment. My schedule helps me to prioritize which work needs to be done first and helps me space it out.
Discipline can be a challenge for some who have a home business. If it has been a challenge for you, then consider setting up work hours and a schedule.
