- If at first you don’t succeed, get out of bed. If you have been in bed for a half hour without falling asleep, get up and leave the room. Do something quiet for twenty minutes — read a book, meditate, write a letter — and then try going back to bed. Lying in bed agonizing about why you’re not falling asleep isn’t going to help you fall asleep!
- And speaking of agonizing… don’t lie in bed worrying about things. I can’t tell you how to stop worrying, but it may help to write down a to-do list for the next day, or make notes on all the things that you’re juggling and what you can (and will) do about them tomorrow. Writing everything down can help clear the worries out of your mind, leaving your mind open and peaceful for sleep.
- Waking up hungry? Try eating a light snack before bed. A glass of warm milk is both filling AND can help you sleep — milk contains tryptophan, the same amino acid found in your turkey dinner that makes you sooooooo sleepy. Don’t eat a huge meal!
- Be careful with caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco… any or all of these can mess with your sleep schedule.
- Try to use sleeping pills as an absolute last resort. Taking sleeping pills can disrupt your body’s natural sleep patterns. If you have long-term difficulties sleeping, sleeping pills could become addictive. And watch the side effects if you do try a sleeping pill — you may find that your reaction time and coordination skills decrease, thanks to the sleeping pills.
- Don’t let yourself oversleep to try and catch up on missed sleep time. Just a few days of sleeping late can reset your body clock to a totally different schedule — you’ll get tired later in the night and wake up later in the morning.
- Are you still sleepy when the alarm goes off? Light and motion can help kick your body clock over into your active daytime phase. If you have the time, step outside and get some natural light when you first get up. At the very least, open the curtains and let the sun in, or turn on all the lights in your room. Walk around for a few minutes to get the blood pumping and the oxygen flowing.
