I for one do not follow the politicians or political news. My husband remains much more interested in campaigns and elections than I do. However, the battle over sex education between Romney and Obama has enticed me to take on a more active political role.
Senator Obama has suggested that all grade school children (beginning in kindergarten) be instructed through a science-based sex education program. He suggests that each grade have an age appropriate sex education program. Romney, on the other hand, feels that there is no age appropriate program when it comes to young children learning about sex.
Obama agreed that he did support sex education for kindergarten children if the curriculum is geared to their age and learning level. He commented that teachers should not lead the children to believe that the stork brings babies. Teachers should have something more to answer the questions of their young students.
While researching sex education in America, I found it very ironic that Massachusetts has one of the most intense sex education programs, Planned Parenthood. A recent bill heard in May of this year would place an age appropriate required sex education program in Massachusetts’s grades kindergarten through 12. Romney once governed Massachusetts. One article that I read stated that Romney had actually supported the age appropriate curriculum.
So am I a supporter of Romney or Obama? Neither really. I do not have enough information to make that decision as it stands now.
The point of my article is that I believe the politicians are more concerned with disagreeing or attacking one another than what is best for education. I wonder if either of the candidates has looked through or contacted publishers of age appropriate sex education programs?
It will interesting to see what is in store for future debates between the two men.
