Sharing the Concept of Preparedness with Others

Preparedness is a concept that we have been taught over and over. Many people outside of our church often regard our preparedness concepts one of those strange things that Mormons do. However, I have found that the times that this is great way to have a discussion and help people around us. I have been approached, by more than one person who knew I was a member, and asked about the concept of preparedness and food storage. Many people embrace this concept as they see how it can benefit them in their lives.

One example is the way that the LDS church is able to respond so quickly to emergency situations both inside and outside of the United States. This response has led many people to look at the church in a new light. It is also a great time to talk about preparedness without being too pushy.

With the current economic times it is also a great time to speak to our friends and neighbors about the importance of being prepared. You can share stories about how having an emergency fund to cover three months of expenses has really helped your family. You can also talk about how a basic food supply of three months can help that money to stretch even further.

As we are open about sharing the concept of being prepared we can bless those around us. It does not hurt anyone to be prepared with food storage, emergency kits and to have a financial reserve. In fact this would be a great outreach activity for many wards and stakes to put on for nonmembers.

Of course it is also important to be willing to help your neighbors when they are in need. This may mean sharing water, taking in meals when needed and just helping out in general. This support and friendship may help them become more receptive to the teachings of the church later on, or it may help them to look at the church with a better understanding.
