Sharing Your Story

Sometimes we hear of people and they speak of their lives and we can think, ‘Wow! I never had anything like that experience.’ We even find it with some of God’s chosen ones like Paul. Paul related his conversion experience to a crowd in Acts 22. If you know the story of Paul, and what happened on the road to Damascus, you might be thinking that’s fine for him but I never had a dramatic conversion experience at all. What I have to say couldn’t be interesting to anyone. Don’t be too sure.

One time a young woman was feeling very much like this. She had been asked to share her testimony at a service and felt embarrassed because it was nothing dramatic. She had been brought up in a Christian home, always went to Sunday school and church, and never knew a time when she didn’t know about God. She had committed her life to Jesus as a young child and since then it had been an ongoing process as she grew and matured and her faith grew and matured as well.

But she’d been asked to share her testimony. She asked those close to her for prayer about this, as feeling very inadequate to do so she stood up to speak about her relationship with God and his reality in her life. She focused on how God had brought her through a difficult time in her life and how she always knew He had hold of her. As she spoke she could see people really listening. Some were nodding. Several were in tears.

At the end of the service many came up to her and spoke to her about her testimony and how much it had touched them. Some commented how closely it mirrored their own experience of God and how they had at times bemoaned the fact they didn’t have a dramatic conversion experience either. She, and they, learned that day that day that God doesn’t only want the person with the big dramatic experience.

We each have a story to tell of God’s dealings with us. You never know how sharing your testimony whether it is in a big group or with just one other person will touch someone else’s life and encourage and strengthen them
