Sheryl Crow will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day on Sunday. According to her website, the singer just adopted a 2-week-old baby boy she named Wyatt Steven. The name honors three important men in Crow’s life—her father Wyatt Crow, her younger brother Steven Crow and her manager Steven “Scooter” Weintraub.
The announcement on her site didn’t give much more information except to say that the child was born in the United States and is healthy.
“We are enjoying some very private family time,” Crow writes.
Personally, I think it’s great news. This is a woman who has survived an emotional beating in the last 15 months. You’ll recall in February 2006 Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent months of treatment. That same month she went through a high profile split with her then fiancé Lance Armstrong. (Crow told one interviewer that she had already picked out her wedding dress… then… poof… the relationship was over.)
For a while I thought Crow and Armstrong would reconcile, but it seems he has moved on with his life and is now in a serious relationship with a fashion designer. That news made me feel even worse for the 45-year-old singer who recently told a rodeo crowd that she was “looking for a cowboy.”
I guess she found one… a pint-sized one, but someone who will definitely keep her busy for the next, oh, say, 20 years. Crow’s rep told PEOPLE magazine that the singer now plans to “take some time off to be a mom.”
I’m looking forward to learning more about Crow’s adoption. The timing couldn’t have been better for her. She just wrapped up her much talked about “Stop Global Warming College Tour.” The trip was made on a vegetable oil-powered bus with “An Inconvenient Truth” producer Laurie David. The two ladies toured 11 college campuses to inform students about environmental issues. A noble cause, but I think she will find being a mom is much more rewarding.
