She’s Not A Red-Headed Step-Child – Disney’s Little Mermaid Ariel

Redheads are distinctive and they are memorable. Some of the most famous redheads in our modern world include the former Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, Pippy Longstocking, Julianne Moore and Debra Messing. But the most famous, the most well known redhead is the Little Mermaid herself, Princess Ariel.

Ariel demonstrates the unique qualities that many associate with redheads from feisty, smart, sexy and enchanting. Redheads are known for their fair skin, nearly translucent and often decorated with little freckles. Redheads are lush, beautiful and exotic. What’s frightening to imagine is that once upon a time, during the conception stage – Ariel was almost not a redhead? Can you imagine the beautiful mermaid without her lustrous red locks?

Earlier this month, another generation was introduced to this wonderful redhead with her splash out of the Disney Vault on a 2-disc Platinum Edition DVD on October 3rd. Disney’s Little Mermaid set new standards when it was released in 1989. The film won two Academy Awards – one for Best Music, Original Score and the second for Best Music, Original Song: Under the Sea. This was a real first that no previous animated film could lay claim to.

For those who don’t remember, the Little Mermaid is based on the tale by Hans Christian Anderson. In his story, the mermaid fell in love with a Prince and gave up her tail to walk on land. In the Disney version, Ariel defies her father King Triton to meet with the sea-witch Ursula. She trades her voice for a few precious days of walking on land. Ultimately, Triton and the Prince must work to help save Ariel. Colorful characters such as Sebastian the crab and Scuttle the pelican.

There are loads of new features on the Little Mermaid 2-Disc Platinum Edition DVD including a music video of Kiss the Girl performed by Ashley Tisdale. There is also a new virtual ride inspired by the Imagineers called the Under the Sea Adventure and finally, you’ll see never-before-seen deleted scenes and a first-time on DVD animated short called The Little Match Girl.
