When it comes to storing your shoes, there are a variety of options available to you. Depending on the shoe types and the size of your collection, your needs might require drastic measures. Here are some of the most basic ways to store your shoes, no matter how many shoes you have or how what type of shoes they are.
1. Boxes
Many people store their shoes in shoeboxes – either the original box that the shoes came in or in plastic boxes that they purchase from home improvement stores. Storing your shoes in boxes will help to keep their shape and extend their life. However, it can be difficult to sort through the boxes when you are ready to retrieve a pair of shoes that you would like to wear. It is also easy to forget which shoes you have and which you need for a certain event.
Boxes can be difficult to store because they are rather large and awkward. Many people decide to take Polaroid pictures of their shoes and tape those messages to the outside of the boxes so that they can easily find and then access their shoes. You should be able to find space for your boxes on the top shelf or floor of just about any closet.
2. Over-the Door racks
If you have particularly thin shoes, such as flat or high heels, then storing them in an over the door rack might be the best option for you. Over the door racks generally are cloth storage units that have compartments for a number of your shoes. These shoes will slip into the compartments and stay. It can be tough to fit larger shoes, such as boots, into the compartments. However, this hanging system is ideal for thin shoes such as slippers.
As an added bonus, over the door racks are also great storage units for items such as belts and pieces of scattered make-up that you might not have another place for.
3. Floor shoe racks
Floor shoe racks are great and versatile storage methods that will hold shoes of any size. They are like two poles joined together by two ends. You then balance your shoes on the poles. It is helpful to have heels on your shoes if you are going to store them on a floor shoe rack. Shoes without heals tend to slip through the cracks and can be difficult to retrieve.
4. Basket
If you have simple shoes, such as slides or flip-flops, storing them in a basket might be the best option for you. Baskets make storing and arranging your shoes very quick and easy. At the end of the day, rather than sorting through piles and rows of shoes, you simply need to kick them off and into the basket – no sorting necessary.
Baskets are also helpful if you have boots or shoes that consistently have a good deal of dirt or mud on them. The basket will help to contain the dirt as well as ensure that you always have a suitable place to store your shoes – even if the rest of the house does not need dirt.
