If you’re newly married and recently moved into your home or even if you’ve been married for a while and recently purchased a home, having a housewarming party is a nice idea. Friends and family will be curious about your new home, so invite them over and show it off.
Some guests will bring gifts, although newlyweds are likely to receive fewer items, since wedding gifts were recently given. Be sure those wedding gifts are in plain view when guests arrive. If you don’t want gifts, but simply want people to visit to see your new home, indicate this on your housewarming invitations.
When you are preparing your invitations, it’s a good idea to include a map to your new home. You can visit Map Quest to create a map, complete with driving directions. Print off as many as you need, or print one and have copies made. If the directions are simple, you may simply want to write them inside the front cover of the card, or on slip of paper to tuck inside the invitation. Be sure to include your new phone number, in case further directions are needed, as well as for RSVPs.
The time you select for you housewarming party is also important. If you plan to have guests around mealtime (lunch or dinner), be sure to include what type of foods will be served on the invitations. If you intend to serve hors d’oeuvres rather than a meal, you don’t want guests to arrive famished. It’s generally a good idea to serve finger foods and keep things casual, since guests are likely to walk around moving from room to room to check out your home and to mingle. A sit down dinner is not generally ideal for housewarming parties.
If you have a large home, you may also want to draw or print a layout of your home, so guests can give themselves a tour when they arrive. If you’re only having a few people, you’ll probably prefer to show them around yourselves.
