Should You Attend All Your Church Activities?

When it comes to church activities, how do you decide which ones to attend and which ones to let pass by? It can be difficult to decide what is right for each family. I know that many of my nonmember family members and friends comment on how busy church keeps our family. So how and when do I decide to skip activities?

It is important to realize that the church is there to support the family. If the activities are getting in the way of you spending the time with your family then you need to choose which activities to cut back on. This is a balancing act, because there are activities, which are important for your family members to attend. My parents’ stake cut all activities down to one night a month, so that Young Men, Young Women’s and Relief Society all met the same night. This did not quite work as expected and it was changed back in about six months.

The youth activities serve a great purpose in helping your teenagers form friendships with other members. The leaders are also other adults that they can turn to when they have questions about the gospel. The Wednesday night activities are about equivalent to the importance of attending church each Sunday.

If you feel that the additional activities are just too much then you can cut back, as you need to. Your youth do not need to be involved in every sporting event. Your family may not decide to attend every ward activity. It is important that you find the balance that best helps your family.

However, it really is important to attend church every Sunday. This is your family’s chance to be spiritually renewed each week. It is also important that you make time to attend the temple on a regular basis. These activities will help to strengthen your family.
