All those pink ribbons that you are seeing everywhere are there for a reason. They represent breast cancer awareness. There are a lot of different companies that have been making pink colored products, to get involved with this cause. I’ve seen pink thermoses, pink reusable canvas bags for grocery shopping, and many pink t-shirts. Some insurance companies have started offering breast cancer insurance to interested customers. Is breast cancer insurance something you should get?
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, one in 250 Americans will get cancer in a given year. They point out that while three in ten Americans will get cancer in their lifetimes, seven out of ten will not. An individual person’s risk for breast cancer depends on many factors Your risk increases if two or more closely related relatives were diagnosed with breast cancer. This is especially true if those relatives were diagnosed before they became fifty years old. If you have concerns about your risk for breast cancer, you might consider getting some genetic counseling. Find out if you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. The presence of either of those genes means your risk for developing breast cancer is between three and seven times higher than women who do not have those particular genes.
Even if your risk is high, is it a good idea to get an insurance policy specifically on breast cancer? There are some things you should know before you spend money on this kind of insurance. First of all, realize that breast cancer insurance is not a replacement for a good health insurance policy. It will not cover most of the things that your health insurance policy is going to cover. Do not dump your health insurance policy and expect the breast cancer insurance to cover all your needs, especially since your health insurance should be covering at least some of the costs of medical bills associated with cancer. A cancer insurance policy provides a pay out that can be used for out of pocket medical expenses, or to pay bills such as a rent or mortgage payment.
