It used to be standard faire for even small businesses to mail out holiday cards this time of year, or send out the annual calendar. But with the rising cost of postage and concern about being politically correct, many small businesses find themselves wondering whether or not to send out cards or even spring for the classic fruit basket?
I still think holiday cards are a nice touch—but it will depend on several factors: what sort of time do you have to do them? Would you rather do something hand-written or pre-embossed—each sends a different message (homey and personal or professional and classy)? How much can you afford to spend on holiday cards and/or gifts from your home business?
If you are concerned about being politically correct, you can do something that is more “universal” or even consider doing “New Year” cards. These are becoming increasingly popular and can be more secular. You will need to keep timing in mind in order to get your cards or gifts out in time for holiday delivery.
Some small businesses try to marry holiday wishes with promotions and marketing (like that trusty holiday calendar from the hardware store or the dentist) and this can be a reasonable option. Just keep in mind that people have a tendency to get quite a bit of extra mail this time of year AND their schedules are pretty solidly booked—more mail and less time to read it, so whatever you decide to do should really stand out in a plump bundle of mail if it is going to get opened up and read. This is another reason that some small businesses consider sending cards or notes at other times of the year—they are less likely to get buried in the holiday deluge.
