Should You Take a Spring Break from Fitness?

You didn’t really read this thinking I was going to suggest you take a break, did you? When I arrived to teach my fitness class this morning I learned that the facility had not scheduled classes due to Spring Break. That got me thinking, should we take a break?

I do think it is important that you keep your routine fresh. Also, it is important to make sure that you don’t overtrain. I always suggest at least one day of rest and staggering days of resistance and cardio training. I don’t advise though, taking an actual break. Once you stop exercising it is very hard to get started again. It is way too easy for a small break to become a continuous break. I like to change things up. We did partner workouts this past week. It feels completely different and usually involves a significant amount of laughter.

If you are bored with your workouts, it is time to shake things up. You can do so by changing your music, scenery or type of exercise. This will go a long way to breathe new energy into your fitness regime. If you can find an exercise partner, try to enlist his support. It is always more fun to exercise with a buddy. You don’t have to do the same thing as your partner. If you have someone to hike with or go to the gym with, it will help you stay accountable.

If you can’t find someone to workout with, try a smaller class and establish a connection. I really work to establish connections with my clients. If I have a personal connection, I can help them celebrate their fitness achievements and we can share in our joint struggles. I have become very good friends with many of my clients. Not only does it make the exercise more fun, it helps to have a support system when one of us is weak.
