Most people look to falling leaves as a sign of autumn. In my home, it’s a set of blood red fangs rather than rust-colored foliage that marks the change of seasons.
My 5-year-old nephew likes to scare my 8-year-old daughter with photos of his Halloween get-ups, which are designed around a pair of well-worn plastic fangs and loads of fake blood that drips from his mouth, down to his chin and throat.
The pictures always score at least a couple of layouts in my holiday scrapbook. Yesterday, as I paged through past Halloween-themed memory albums I was reminded that All Hallows’ Eve is right around the corner, and I really need to think of some new ways to spice up my page designs.
In years past, I concentrated exclusively on the night’s activities and neglected to set the tone for my layouts by documenting what we do to prepare for the holiday. This year, I am planning to take shots and jot down notes of my daughter’s quest for the perfect Halloween costume. I also want to snap some pictures of my family’s pumpkin picking adventures and journal about the ways we decorate our home (inside and out) with jack-o-lanterns, scarecrows and hay bales.
Fortunately, I don’t have to spend too much to embellish my Halloween-themed pages, as I saved a ton of money by stocking up on materials last year. By hitting end-of-the-season sales you score huge discounts on Halloween scrapbooking merchandise. For example, last November I loaded up on patterned paper, stickers, ribbons, rub-ons, and chipboard accents with a Halloween theme. I also purchased orange cardstock in bulk, as well as, spider punches, glitter trim, and spooky stickers from a clearance bin at Hobby Lobby.
If money is tight, but you still want to go all out to craft an eye-popping Halloween-themed scrapbook, look for free elements. The Internet is teeming with free digital scrapbooking supplies with a Halloween theme. If you’re not a digital scrapbooker, you can simply print the graphics you want to use onto acid-free cardstock and cut them out with a craft knife or sharp scissors.
