Signs Spring has Sprung in Texas

You can tell when Old Man Winter has released his grip on the Lone Star State when area highways become black… and blue.

Bright blue bluebonnets are blossoming all over the great state of Texas right now signaling the arrival of spring and the thousands of visitors that make their way down south to soak up the spectacular sights the famous wildflowers create.

For those of you unfamiliar with this annual rite of passage the bluebonnet is the state’s official flower and can be found throughout Texas. The native plant is often accompanied along Texas roads by an equally bright orange-colored wildflower known as Indian paintbrush.

If you would like to experience the bluebonnet season in person here are a few tips to keep in mind:

· Flower experts say the Hill Country region and areas near Brenham in Central Texas are considered prime bluebonnet viewing spots.

· The exact peak of bluebonnet season is tricky to pinpoint. Local botanists say judging by years past the flowers should peak this year during the first couple of weeks of April. However, the peak season tends to occur earlier farther south in the state where weather is warmer.

· Picking the flowers is highly discouraged. Instead, officials ask admirers to simply snap photos of the colorful bluebonnets.

· If you are looking for a safer place than the side of a highway to view the pretty flowers head over to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. The center, which was founded by the late first lady who loved Texas’ native plants, hosts “Wildflower Days” through April 30 to show off bluebonnets and other wildflowers. It also provides spots for taking photos in its gardens.

· Also, the Texas Department of Transportation features a “Bluebonnet Report” on its website. The agency also provides listings of numerous wildflower festivals in the area featuring other popular blossoms including the pink evening primrose, Mexican plum, Redbud and Texas mountain laurel.
