Digital photography makes so many cool and creative projects possible. This blog isn’t about those projects though. Instead, it’s about a very silly game that your kids will love to play. It’s also a way to teach them some art terms. But mainly, it is just for fun.
To start, make sure you have good saved copies of your digital pictures. You don’t want to lose those. Next, save a copy of those pictures. I like to name them something that lets me know they aren’t our “real” pictures, but pictures we can play around with.
Once you have copies you can play with. Open up just about any painting and drawing program, or a photo manipulation program. Download the copy of the photo and play away. Kids love to change their hair color by painting it pink or green. They can draw on a mustache, or spray paint on a Santa beard. They can give themselves deer antlers, or butterfly wings, or elf ears, or even change the color of their eyes. They also like to try all the different effects like skewing and stretching which can make the pictures look short and fat or tall and thin. They can swap blue for red, and green for yellow and see what happens. Once they get used to the program they can select and copy, which gives them the possibility of having eight arms, or three eyes.
Kids also like to add to the background. They can put a flying saucer over their head, or put themselves in a pile of green goop, or white themselves out in a snowstorm.
The key is to just let them play and get used to the art terms, and to be as silly as they want to be. It’s a great chance for their creativity to shine.
