Silver Solutions

While incredibly convenient, wipes and mitts are not the only ways you can restore your silver pieces to their original shine. If you prefer to stick with commercial products rather than experiment with homemade cleaning solutions, then consider using silver polish paste.

Connoisseurs sells a decent silver polish paste that comes in an eight-ounce jar. The jar includes an applicator, though you can use an old rag or damp sponge to apply the paste to your silver pieces. The paste is rather concentrated, so I would suggest using a little bit to start, and then add more if needed. The jar notes that the paste is designed to remove heavy tarnish; however, it can also be used on smaller jobs, just don’t use as much. Simply polish the items, rinse off excess paste with clean water, and dry with a soft cloth.

Another option is to use Oneida’s Silver Polishing Cloth. If you have used any of Oneida’s silver cleaning products, then you know how effective they are. The cloths are no different. In fact, they are as good if not better than the company’s line of mitts and wipes. The cloths offer dual-action strength. There’s a light blue inner cloth that contains cleaners which is wrapped around a grey outer cloth that polishes your silver and silver plated items. The blue part is used to remove tarnish; however, instead of interchanging the two cloths, Oneida simply adhered them to each other, so you get the strength of two products in one.

Like the wipes, the silver polishing cloths are mess-free and can be used on a variety of items, from candle holders to earrings. The nice part of cleaning with the cloths is that you don’t have to deal with dirtying another rag or getting paste or other goop on your fingers or clothing. What’s more, Oneida claims that silver items that are polished by their two-in-one cloths stay tarnish free for a longer period of time.
