Have fun and give your feathered friends a treat at the same time!
Bread and Breakfast
Use slices of plain white bread or use assorted breads like wheat or rye. You can generally pick up day old bread at the bakery for little cost or you can just use what you have. Next, get out some cookie cutters and have kids cut the bread into whichever shapes they like. Adults can poke a hole through the top center of the bread. Large Christmas tree ornament hooks work great for hanging these up, or you can thread some twine threw them and string them all together. String one, tie a knot to keep it from shifting, move over a couple inches, and tie another knot (so there’s a knot on each side of each one). Hang from a tree or railing within view of the window or door.
Breakfast Served All Day
You can use round breakfast cereal with a hole in the center, such as Cheerios, to make simple birdfeeders. While breakfast is the most important meal of the day, birds can enjoy the cereal any time. Just cut some string or yarn about the same length you would need to make necklace. Tie one end to any object larger than the holes in the cereal and begin stringing the cereal. When you get to the end, tie a knot. Release the other end and tie it to the knotted end. Hang over the tips of branches or from a fence post or porch rail.
*Teach children to watch quietly as birds come to eat. Make sure to replace the food when it’s gone if you want the birds to come back. You might be surprised by all the different varieties of birds that will visit. It’s fun, and educational, to look them up online and learn what kind they are.
