Decorating cakes does not have to be difficult or time consuming. It should be fun! There are lots of cool ideas available and of course you can find some great cake pans too. Still, there is something to be said for simple ideas as well, and the following are super simple, but still cute and fun.
Smiley Cakes
Bake a round cake. You can make two smiley cakes using the layers separately, or you can make a layer cake. Frost your cake(s) with yellow frosting. You can use lemon or add some yellow food coloring to your favorite white frosting. Then, just make a smiley face. You can use a black licorice whip for the mouth and black licorice bits for the eyes, or draw the face on with a tube of black frosting.
For a super cool smiley cake, use a red licorice string for the smile and place a pair of children’s sunglasses where the eyes should go (after removing the arms from the glasses).

Gettin’ Fancy With it
How many times have you been frosting or decorating a cake when your children asked to help? This time, let them!
Bake a 9” x 13” cake and allow to cool thoroughly. Let your children frost it and supply them with gels, tubes of icing, tiny candies, and sprinkles. Let them go for it. They will have a great time decorating the cake and will also be proud to show that they helped.
Cake Decorating in a Pinch
If you have no time left for cake decorating, have your kids design something cute, print it off your computer, cut it out, and place it on top of the cake. Put it on just before presenting the cake and take it off before the lighting candles.
