Simple Last-Minute Thanksgiving Decorations

One of the advantages of parenting a first grader is that you’re pretty much set in the seasonal decoration department. Since the beginning of the month, my daughter has brought home no less than a dozen homemade Thanksgiving-themed craft projects. Each and every handcrafted turkey, pilgrim, cornucopia and Giving Tree is prominently showcased throughout our home, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. My daughter’s art teacher went all out this year.

If your children weren’t as productive in art class, or you’re just looking for easy and inexpensive ways to keep the kiddos busy on Thanksgiving morning, and you’d love a few extra homemade decorations to display before dinner guests arrive, then consider making the following:

TURKEY CUPS

Materials:

Paper or foam cup (8.5 oz.)

Acrylic paint in fall colors (brown, tan, orange, red, green, yellow, etc.)

Large brown pom-pom for head

Small foam heart for waddle

Small orange foam triangle for beak

2 small googly eyes

3” x 2” piece of orange construction paper

1 sheet of white construction paper

White craft glue

Scissors

Directions:

Place cup upside down and paint brown.

To make the feathers, paint the white construction paper with several fall colors, then let dry.

Have child trace hand and then cut out in one large piece. These will be the turkey’s feathers. Next, cut the tips of each feather into a point.

Apply glue to the bottom portion of the feathers and press onto the bottom of the cup. Hold in place for a minute or so the glue adheres.

Place foam heart upside down and glue the foam triangle, point down, onto the upside down heart. The upper points of the triangle should be hanging over the edge. This is the turkey’s beak and waddle.

Glue the brown pom-pom to the top of the paper cup.

Glue the googly eyes and the beak and waddle to the head.

Cut two feet from the orange construction paper and glue to the bottom of the cup.
