Simple Summer Sanity Savers

summer

School’s out for some kids, while others are just a few weeks away from enjoying the freedom of summer vacation.

For parents, the end of the academic year brings excitement and some trepidation.  After all, most moms and dads know it’s just a matter of time before seasonal boredom sets in.

To preserve your sanity in the weeks to come, consider keeping your kids busy with the following summer-themed crafts:

Sugar-Free Ice Cream Cone

Not only is this adorable ice cream cone sugar-free, it’s also calorie-free and drip-free.  All you need to make this cute craft are a few sheets of brown construction paper, pom-poms in a variety of colors, colored beads, glue and scissors.  To start, cut one piece of the construction paper in half, and it into a cone.  Next, glue the ends of the cone together.  When it is dry, trim the top of your cone, so it is flat.  Apply glue to the top edge of the cone and attach the pom-poms with glue. Fill any open spaces with more pom-poms.  Finally, use the small beads as sprinkles.  To get the beads to stick to the pom-poms, just dab a small amount of glue to the beads and place them carefully on top.

Decorative Sand

This craft is great to make following a trip to the beach.  All you need is a pail of sand, some newspaper, wax paper, colored chalk, a clear glass or plastic bottle, a pencil, and a cutting board.  Start by spreading the newspaper on your work area.  Next, place a piece of wax paper on the cutting board and pour sand on it.  Then, take a piece of chalk and roll it across the sand.  Repeat the process until the sand is completely colored.  Use the wax paper as a funnel and pour the colored sand into the bottle.  Finally, use the pencil to poke designs into the sand.  Cap the bottle and display it for all to see.
