It doesn’t take a ton of money or fancy toys to engage your toddler. With a little planning and a lot of imagination you can make toddler play time a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Here are some simple activities to get you started:
USE YOUR EARS
Take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and head outside with your toddler to exercise her hearing. Spread out a big towel or blanket in your yard and sit down with your toddler. Have her close her eyes and listen carefully. After a minute or so as her what she could hear, then tell her what you heard: Rustling leaves, a wind chime, a bird singing, a car driving past. This is a great game for helping your toddler develop her listening and descriptive skills.
CLAPPING GAME
Simple clapping games, such as Pat-a-Cake and Miss Mary Mack help boost your toddler’s language skills as well as her hand-eye coordination. If your toddler is unable to clap on her own yet, let her hold your hands while you pat them together.
HIDE-AND-SEEK
Toddler versions of hide-and-seek should be kept simple. Make it easy by taking turns with your tot hiding under the bed sheets. Or simply use a big towel and hide behind it at bath time. Another idea is to place a blanket over your toddler’s head and carry her into another room. When you arrive at your new destination remove the blanket and watch your toddler’s reaction when she discovers she is in a new spot.
NATURE HIKE
Break up the day by taking your tot for a walk outside. Lace up your shoes and take a bucket with you. While you are strolling have your toddler collect small objects, such as rocks, leaves, pinecones, etc. Allow your toddler to carry the bucket, but don’t be surprised if he dumps out its contents. If he does, then start a new collection. This activity helps toddlers develop dexterity and communication skills.
