Simple Valentine Crafts for Preschoolers

I swear it was just last week that I was mailing out Christmas cards (okay, maybe it was two weeks ago). Now, Valentine’s Day is just 11 days away, which means there’s no sense in putting away my craft bin at this point. This, of course, is welcome news to my preschooler, who is always ready for new craft projects.

The following Valentine art projects are ones we made last year when she was 3 years old. They are appropriate for ages 3-5, provided an adult is present. Older kids could make them on their own.

Besides being easy to make, these particular projects are easy on the wallet and travel well too. I know because I sent them 5,000 miles away to grandparents in Hawaii who assured me that they arrived in pristine condition.

SPONGE PAINT VALENTINE’S DAY CARD

Materials:

Construction paper

Paper plate

Red or pink paint

Sponge

Markers or crayons

Glitter, sequins or other embellishments

Directions:

If you want a traditional, folded card, then fold one piece of construction paper in half. If you want the non-folded type that is often handed out by students in schools, then fold and cut a piece of construction paper into quarters. This will give you 4 cards.

Cut a sponge into a heart shape making sure the size fits your card.

Pour a small amount of red or pink paint onto a paper plate.

Dip the heart-shaped sponge into the paint, and then carefully stamp it on the card.

If you want a glittery heart, sprinkle some glitter on the wet paint. If you want to further embellish the card you can glue on sequins, ribbon or yarn.

When the card is dry write a Valentine message inside.

FINGER PAINT VALENTINE’S DAY CARD

Materials:

2 pieces of paper

Fingerpaint

Scissors or pinking shears

Glue

Glitter

Directions:

On one piece of paper, have your child fingerpaint his/her own design.

Next, sprinkle some glitter on the paint while it’s still wet.

Let paint dry completely.

Fold a new piece of paper in half, creating a card shape.

Using the dried fingerpainting cut out one or more hearts for each Valentine card.

Glue one or more hearts on each card.

Write a Valentine message in each card.
