Simplifying Bedding Storage

At our old house, we were blessed with huge closets which made storing everything so easy. We even had a walk in cedar closet! Our current home, however, is a little anemic in the closet area, at least compared to what we were used to. Instead of a huge closet to store all of our bedding (and health and beauty stockpile items, and the iron, and the hairdryer, and seasonal stuff), we now have a tiny linen closet in the hallway that barely holds our towels and wash clothes.

This little storage situation has forced us to simplify our bedding storage and get a little bit creative. It isn’t as neat as I would like, yet, but things are improving.

First of all, instead of storing all of the bedding in one place as we did before, the bedding is now stored in each bedroom. This has actually made changing the bed a bit easier. In our master bedroom, we actually keep the bedding in a wardrobe. My husband and I don’t have large wardrobes (I use some clothing storage space for books), so this works out well for us.

The tiny linen closet holds just the towels, plus a few extra items in baskets, such as toothpaste, floss, and bathroom tissue.

Before I used to organize the sheets by placing an entire set inside a pillow case. With so much storage this was handy. Now, however, I find that the resulting packages are too bulky and the sheets store flatter when just stacked. Extra pillow cases are stored on the side, making them easier to grab.

I’ve also had to relocate seasonal bedding to a bin in the attic. When the seasons change, I take out one set of bedding (such as the heavy comforter) and replace it with another (such as the summer bedspread). This also serves as a reminder to me to rotate the mattress.

How do you store your bedding, and do you have any suggestions for simplifying the process?
