Singer/Actress Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuit

If you’ve been following the reports on the fatal car accident involving R&B singer Brandy then you may have seen this next item coming a mile away. According to PEOPLE magazine, the parents of the woman killed in the accident just filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the former “Moesha” star.

According to court documents, the victim’s parents allege, “Brandy (her real name is Brandy Norwood) was driving recklessly” when she struck their daughter. The court papers go on to say on December 30, 2006 the 38-year-old victim, a mother of two, was on her way to one of two waitress jobs she held when Brandy allegedly rear-ended her car on a Los Angeles freeway. Police say the victim’s car then hit another vehicle, slid sideways into the center divider and was then hit by another car, which ultimately killed the Moroccan immigrant.

Yesterday, crash investigators recommended that the 27-year-old singer be charged with “misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.” Less than 24 hours later, Brandy was hit with the multi-million dollar civil suit. The Los Angeles City Attorney is currently reviewing the criminal aspect of the case. If charges are filed and Brandy is found guilty, she faces up to one year in county jail.

I’m no legal expert, but I highly doubt that the singer/actress would have to spend any time behind bars if she was convicted. First of all, I’m sure if charges were filed against her she would hire the most expensive attorney in town. Secondly, I would bet that this is her first offense. And finally, there’s always the issue of public support and how that may sway a jury.

Brandy is a Grammy award-winning singer. She has made five albums and has appeared in numerous TV shows, including the sitcom “Moesha” from 1996-2001 and most recently as a judge for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” She also starred in a MTV reality television show, which chronicled her pregnancy. That was then, now she faces perhaps two potentially life altering lawsuits. It just proves how unpredictable life can be.
