It looks as though Mel Gibson may have a conscience after all.
At least part of one, anyway. And it’s beginning to bother him.
A lot.
The father of seven (soon to be eight) reportedly went “ballistic” in church last Sunday. In what is being described as a “crazed rant,” the actor apparently lit into parishioners while pacing back and forth on the altar of Holy Family Chapel in Agoura Hills, California.
I suppose having a meltdown on the altar (a place reserved exclusively for priests and altar servers) is one of the perks of building your own (purported) Catholic Church, which celebrates the classical Roman Liturgy or “Latin Mass,” in its traditional form.
So here’s the latest on the king of hypocrisy:
According to RadarOnline.com, Gibson went off in front of two priests and a visiting bishop, after becoming increasingly frustrated with members of the congregation, who he claims, have been gossiping about his immoral personal affairs.
Sources tell the website: “Mel got up on his stage — the altar — and went off. He tried to intimidate parishioners by staring at everyone with his angry eyes. Mel even threatened to shut down the church if people kept gossiping about him. The bottom line is that if Mel hadn’t cheated on his wife and gotten his Russian girlfriend pregnant, there wouldn’t be much to gossip about – he created this mess, and now he’s trying to control it.”
(Note: Parishioners of Holy Family Chapel looking to attend Traditional Latin Mass at a drama-free church, this will help.)
Another parishioner shared the following: “Mel’s completely lost it. [His] holier than thou world is falling apart around him — all these years he’s been preaching the good holy word, and now that the wizard’s curtain has been pulled back, we find that Mel hasn’t been practicing what he preaches.”
As if it were not bad enough that Gibson went on this public tirade in a church, consider that he did so while his children and grandchildren were present. According to reports, Gibson’s 28-year-old daughter, her two young children, and his 10-year-old son, Thomas, were forced to sit and watch their father/grandfather humiliate himself (and them) in a place of worship.
I guess the arrogant actor got fed up with his fellow parishioners not worshipping him enough.
Sarcasm aside, you have got to feel sorry for Gibson’s children.
Millions of ex-fans have flooded online forums expressing shock over Gibson’s unconscionable actions—and these people have never even met the popular Hollywood heavyweight.
Imagine if the guy was your father.
Because Gibson is living in sin, he is not able to receive Communion in the Catholic Church. Yet, he reportedly makes sure his 10-year-old son attends Mass each week to receive the sacrament.
On the surface this practice may seem admirable. After all, Thomas is a minor, and as his father, Gibson is ultimately responsible for the boy’s spiritual upbringing.
Still, you have to wonder what sick, twisted, mixed-up message Gibson is sending to his children: He splits from their mother, counter sues her in the divorce proceedings, commits adultery, impregnates a virtual stranger and jokes about it on national TV.
Bottom line: Gibson has soundly obliterated his free will by going against sound reason and the vow he made before the altar that it happened. As he runs from his marriage he runs from God, so we should all feel sorry for poor, poor Mel Gibson, right?
Not me. I feel sorry for his kids. No child should have to be subjected or scandalized the way Gibson’s children have. Their father willingly ignored moral laws, and now they must pay for his selfishness?
The “Lethal Weapon” star got frustrated with his marriage. He did not keep his heart, watch and pray. Instead, he neglected to see the difference between love and self-love. Simply put, Gibson found a woman he could love himself in, better than his wife… and then he gave into lust, and got her pregnant.
What’s left behind in the wake of Gibson’s selfishness is a 10-year-old, who must endure being ping-ponged between two homes, while trying to make sense of his father’s hypocrisy. In addition, you have an unborn child, who will be delivered into a scandalous situation, and who may or may not be raised in the Catholic Church. And if he does, he will likely never see his father receive sacraments in it.
According to Catholic teaching, Gibson can’t receive Communion because he is an adulterer, and in violation of one of the Ten Commandments. Furthermore, he can’t go to confession until he turns away from that violation by ending the offending activity, confesses his sins, and promises to amend his life. I don’t see that happening anytime soon given that it appears Gibson is too busy trying to rationalize his inappropriate behavior rather than change it. How hard it must be to live a constant lie. Gibson proved that in church last Sunday.
So how long do you think Gibson’s children will have to pay for the sins of their father? Or more importantly, when do you think “The Passion of the Christ” star will start acting like a morally responsible parent?
