You might look at that title and think “Libby, you’ve gotten your blogs confused! This should be in Pop Culture, not Green Living.” But wait, let me explain.
As you probably know, I love combining pop culture and green living and today, it is easier than ever.
Surely you remember the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The premise is that actor Kevin Bacon is the center of the universe and everyone is connected to him with six steps or less because it is truly a small world. It’s your job to try to connect an actor or actress to him through as few film roles as possible. For example, it is possible to connect Twenties It Girl Clara Bow to Kevin Bacon in only three steps. Bow appeared in the 1930 film “Paramount on Parade” with Iris Adrian, who appeared in the 1980 film “Herbie Goes Bananas” with Cloris Leachman, who appeared in the star studded “New York, I Love You” with Bacon.

I actually loved this little game, but apparently, Bacon himself didn’t – at least not initially. Which I could never figure out because it made him a pop culture icon (not that he wasn’t already one).
But, Bacon eventually took the whole game thing and ran with it. He created the charity SixDegrees.org. The premise of this charity is that it really is a small world and you can make a difference. The website calls says, “It’s social networking with a social conscious.” Partners of Six Degrees include Network for Good, Hanes, Parade Magazine, and the Case Foundation, Pepsi Refresh Project, and StayClassy.
On Six Degrees, you can contribute to your favorite charities, but you can also create a social fundraiser – a bit like Crowdrise. You can see favorite causes of celebrities and you can also purchase Good Cards, which are gift cards for charities.
Having started in 2007, Six Degrees has raised almost $4 million ($3,894,522 to be exact) for charities.
