Skills You Need to Get Employed

In the past, all you needed to get a job was to be neat and clean and have a good work ethic. That just isn’t the case anymore. In today’s market, many willing and able workers are unable to find jobs because they lack the skills that employers require. As the world of employment grows and changes, employees are finding that they also need to grow and change. Here are a few skills that you need to get a job in today’s world.

Computer Skills
This is a big one. You don’t have to be a computer programmer, but you do need to be able to use basic computer programs. It is important that you know how to use one of the newer Microsoft operating systems like Windows XP. You also should know how to use Microsoft Word. In addition, you need to be confident when using the internet and email.

Customer Service Skills
I have written several blogs now on the importance of customer service, but it is important to say it again. About 85% of all jobs now require work with the public in some capacity. You might think that customer service is easy, but consider the average employee that you encounter at a fast food restaurant or mega-mart. The poor service we usually receive in these places is evidence that good customer service skills are not the norm. Take the time to work on your customer service skills and you will be much more marketable.

Job Seeking Skills
More and more, it is important for you to know how to search for a job. I am amazed at how many people make such basic mistakes when filling out applications and completing interviews. Take the time to learn these skills and practice them until you get it right. It will make a world of difference for you as you look for a job. If you know how to find a job, that alone will take you worlds ahead of your competition.

The important thing to remember is that there are certain skills that most employers expect from applicants and that these are reasonable expectations. Take the time to learn the things I have mentioned, as well as any skills that may be specific to your particular field. When you get that job offer, you’ll know it was worth it.
