One trend that seems to be going strong right now is skipping showers in order to save money. By showering less often, you can save on hot water costs, shampoo costs, soap cost and even clothing costs (if you wear the same clothes). But is it worth it?
I think whether or not you skip a shower really depends on your own personal body chemistry and your own personal tolerance. Some people tend to feel clean longer than others or at least aren’t bothered by skipping a shower here and there. That just isn’t me, so unfortunately, I just can’t save this way. My hair tends to weigh down without a daily washing, for example.
I don’t look forward to skipping showers, although I admit it happens. In my case, it is usually because as a work at home mom of small children, showers have taken on the status of luxury. I often have to try to find ways to sneak one in somewhere during the day. I’ve even snuck away from the dinner table after wolfing down a couple of bites, just to make this happen.
Some people skip showers every day because they have very dry skin or hair that would benefit from that missed day.
But, I’m really here to talk about people who voluntarily skip showering in order to save money. One way to get by while doing this is to use the sink and a washcloth to clean the “stinky parts” or essentials, such as armpits.
Instead of actively doing this myself, I try to reduce the cost of the showers themselves. We use a low-flow shower head, keep our showers relatively shirt, and are careful not to overuse the soap and shampoo. If there is a ton of lather left over, well that soap is going down the drain. I’ll also take advantage of free samples and getting travel size products for free with a coupon.
