Sky High: A High School for Superheroes

Did you ever feel pressure to be like your Mom and Dad? Most of the time those situations are always something like Mom and Dad are doctors, so of course their children should be doctors too. Or maybe your family has a business are you are naturally expected to carry on in your parents footsteps, regardless of whether or not that is what you want to do. So what do you do when your parents are two of the biggest superheroes on the planet?

In the movie “Sky High” Will is facing the fact that he may never be a superhero like his parents. Will’s parents are “The Commander” and “Jetstream” the two biggest superheroes around. They decide to send Will to “Sky High” a high school specifically for the children of superheroes. The first day of school everyone is expected to get up in front of the class and show everyone what their powers are.

Will unfortunately has no powers so he has nothing to show the class. No powers? from the son of the two biggest superheroes around? Surely not! The teacher of Wills class decides to have a car dropped on Will to make him show his powers to the rest of the class, of course with no powers, having a car dropped on you isn’t your idea of a good time. Will is labeled as a “sidekick” rather than a “hero” and faces ridicule from his classmates for not living up to the greatness of his parents.

This movie takes the normal high school movie complete with bullies and cheerleaders, and turns it upside down with kids who can burst into flames and melt into a puddle of water.

I think this movie was very well written, and is something that adults can enjoy watching just as much as their children. There is a little bit of super hero like violence and peril, but no more than your children would get watching Saturday morning cartoons. I think Sky High is appropriate for any elementary school, aged child, or younger children who have already been exposed to super hero like violence.

Sky High is available at most DVD stores and online at Amazon.com
