Slash Your Freezer Bill

Freezers are wonderful appliances. We have a full size stand alone freezer, as well as a large freezer that is part of our refrigerator unit. You know that I keep both of these units stocked. I like to freezer cook and buy in bulk, so having these appliances helps my larger family save money.

Freezers do tend to use up quite a bit of money, though, so that is the downside. You don’t want to save money by freezer cooking and then spend it all on energy to run your freezer. So with that in mind, take a look at the following tips. They will help you slash your freezer bill.

The biggest expense your freezer will give you is when you purchase it. To cut this cost, consider buying a freezer from a “scratch and dent” or refurbished store. Most people put their freezers in the basement, so who cares if there is a little scratch or ding in the door. This will allow you to get a new freezer without the new freezer cost. Newer units are more efficient, so I don’t recommend purchasing a unit that is more than three or four years old.

Next, let us talk about some ways that you can cut down on that energy cost. Unlike refrigerators which run more efficiently when air can circulate freezers work their best and use the least amount of money when they are packed full. So keep your freezer stocked, or place gallon milk jugs filled with water to take up the extra space.

Tighten the seals on your freezer. One way to tell if your seals aren’t tight enough is to place a dollar bill or piece of paper in the doorway and close the door on it with one end sticking out. If you can pull it out easily, then your door hinge or gasket need some attention.
