Sleds and Other Things That Go: Fabulous Preschool Snow Toys

Sled

Whee! Winter has arrived in our neck of the woods, although here in the Pacific Northwest winter usually enters with a whimper and doesn’t stay long before the rains begin again. Yesterday we used the opportunity provided by a couple of inches of snow and went sledding. We have a good old boat of a sled, but it’s a little slow. Sometimes we want a bit more speed and better handling so that we don’t thwack into trees, and so went on an investigation of the wild snow toys that are on the market right now. Here are a few highlights.

For those adults and small children with more than the usual level of insanity, the Zipfy Mini Luge beckons. Now, I tend to be a little feeble in the sliding down hills department, but if your small child loves to show off on the slopes, then the Zipfy is ideal. It is a little sled that looks more like a miniature racing car, and it has a lever so that your child can turn the sled.

The Snowboogie Skeleton is a pared-down racing machine. With handles on the sides and a sleek appearance, it looks like it would whiz any preschooler and parent combo down the slopes with extreme speed.

The Mountain Boy Sledworks flyer is more my style. It’s handmade out of birch and has a delightfully retro feel. The bottom is made out of plastic to move your child down the slopes with a bit more speed than our old boat.

If you’re more my style and your preschooler wants the fun of a sled without the speed, try a pull sled. My daughter still enjoys hers. These runner sleds are the ones where your child sits, goes down a small slope, or gets pulled around. In our house, the “mom, can you drag me up the hill in the sled?” aspect of the pull sled is still quite popular.

What wild and wacky snow toys are you eying for this winter season?
