Sleeping with the Fishes

It’s probably not an offer you would consider if an associate of Don Vito Corleone suggested it, but the following deals, which allow you to come face to face with exotic fishes while you are trying to catch some zzzz’s, are 100% pure family-friendly.

FLORIDA

Getting to Jules’ Undersea Lodge, located in Florida’s Key Largo is an adventure in itself. Spending the night at the unique lodging requires diving 21 feet beneath the sea surface through a tropical mangrove lagoon. Your payoff for taking the plunge—an unforgettable night mingling with vibrant sea life at an underwater hotel that originally started as a research laboratory in Puerto Rico in the 1970s. The hotel features 42-inch round windows that let you spy on tropical angelfish, barracuda, and snappers in their natural habitat. Rooms also come equipped with creature comforts such as showers, kitchens, and DVD players. Rates start at $375 per night per person, which include a three-hour diving course so you can get to your underwater room safely. The price also covers a light breakfast and dinner.

MALDIVES

The Huvafen Fushi Resort, in the stunning Maldives offers guests the chance to experience life in the world’s only underwater spa (where you can nap with the fishes). The luxurious resort is home to the award-winning completely submerged Lime Spa, which features exotic sea-themed treatments such as ancient rock massages and pearl and kelp body mud wraps in one of two underwater rooms that offer soothing vistas of the surrounding sea life. The top-rated resort is located on a small island in North Malé Atoll. Guests spend the night above the water’s surface in one of 43 chic bungalows, each complete with a private pool. Rack rates start at $880 per night and include breakfast.

SWEDEN

Sweden’s, charming Utter Inn is a hot spot for tourists who thrive on underwater adventures. The waitlist to stay at the one-room inn might be a mile-long, but those who have experienced having fish peer through their bedroom windows say it is well worth the wait. To get to the unique lodging you start at the port of Västerås near Stockholm where the inn’s owner picks you up in an inflatable boat and shuttles you out on Lake Mälaren. You are then dropped off at the undersea inn and left to enjoy the panoramic vistas and the views of marine life from your underwater habitat. You can also arrange for your dinner to be delivered by boat. Activities include swimming, sunbathing or kayaking. Rates start at $250 per night.
