I wrote a few months ago about Slingbox, a device by Sling Media that allows users to watch their home television anywhere in the world with an Internet connection.
This year, Sling Media has created a new device, the SlingCatcher. The SlingCatcher works in a similar way to the SlingBox, except in the reverse. With the SlingBox you watch television on you computer, with the SlingCatcher, you can watch your computer on your television.
The device has built-in wi-fi, S-video, component, and HDMI ports, as well as a few USB ports.
The device is set to be released in mid-2007 slightly after a very similar product put out by Apple, AppleTV that is due out in February.
The SlingCatcher has a built-in hard drive but is not set up to transfer data to and from your computer like AppleTV. The hard drive supposedly is for downloading things directly onto the SlingCatcher s a subscription service, although no connections have been made yet to subscription services.
I have personally been very impressed with Sling Medias devices up t this point. For a a while I worked for a soap opera site writing recaps, and it was nice to have the ability to watch the show from where ever I was. A friend I work with used the SlingBox to watch local sporting games while he was in China last year.
The world is getting more and more connected, making it easier to get literally anything you want whenever you want.
I am really excited about the SlingCatcher. I do a lot of video editing on my laptop. It would be beat to set it up so I could look at my computer screen on my television instead and operate my computer with a wireless keyboard and mouse from my sofa.
