Slushie and MilkShake Recipes

During the hot summer months nothing hits the spot like a good slushie or low fat milkshake. Make it healthier by adding plain or flavored yogurt, a dash of flax or wheat germ, or even powdered protein. Slushies are a great low fat dessert or snack. A good low fat milkshake will curb any craving for ice cream. You can get creative with both slushies and milkshakes. Basically you need ice and your choice of fruit for the slush or low fat or skim milk for the milkshake. Consider adding in frozen yogurt, low fat ice cream, or fat free half and half to make thicker shakes. Use your imagination!

Here a few recipes we use in our home for quite some time, most were passed along to us to try. Enjoy!

Watermelon Slush

4 cups cubed seedless watermelon

10 ice cubes

1/3 cup fresh lime juice

1/4 cup white sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

Place watermelon and ice into a blender. Pour in lime juice, sugar, and salt. Blend until smooth.

Banana Slush

4 ripe bananas

2 cups white sugar

3 cups water

1 (46 fluid ounce) can pineapple juice

2 (12 fluid ounce) cans frozen orange juice concentrate

1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate

3 cups water

3 liters ginger ale

In a blender, combine bananas, sugar and 3 cups water. Blend until smooth. Pour into a large bowl and stir in pineapple juice. Blend in orange juice concentrate, lemonade concentrate and 3 cups water. Divide into 3 plastic containers and freeze until solid.

Remove from freezer 3 to 4 hours before serving. Using one portion at a time, place slush in a punch bowl and pour in 1 liter of ginger ale for each.
