Every day we are given small opportunities to serve those around us. This type of small service can make a big difference in someone’s day. It can also help you to feel closer to the Lord as you help His children. It is important that we look for these opportunities and take advantage of them. I have witnessed several small acts of service over the past few days.
My husband just helped our neighbors load their moving truck. He went over and volunteered to help, when he realized that they did not have anyone to help them. We have spoken to our neighbors once before (we live in an apartment and are still fairly new here). He did this even though he was tired after working all day. He didn’t do it for recognition; he just did it to help.
Another example I have seen recently is someone volunteering to pick up and watch the older children of a mother who had just had a baby. This small act of service allowed the mother to get some rest and gave the older children a break from being stuck at home.
A third example is when someone offered to help my child into a grocery cart when she realized that I had my hands full with other children. This took only a minute of her time, but it really made a difference in my day. I felt like someone else realized how hard it was to take three kids to the grocery store, instead of getting the dirty looks as I push noisy children down the aisles.
The point of each of these examples is that the service does not need to be a big thing. It can be as simple as holding a door open, giving a smile, an encouraging word or a hug. Sometimes service is a big project like painting a house, other times it is smaller and just being kind to someone. No matter how you serve you are blessing someone’s life.
