If you have been working from home for a while, it is likely that you have settled into a comfortable work routine. Perhaps you start each “shift” in the same way, or you have a pattern of doing tasks in a certain order. Routines can be wonderful and they can help to keep you on track. Sometimes, though, you can find ways to adjust your routine in order to become even more productive.
A couple of ideas for adjustments that you could make to your work day fall under the general topic of doing less and accomplishing more. I know that sounds strange, but it is possible. For example, paring down your to – do list to fewer high priority tasks can give you a sense of accomplishment when you actually get all of those items done. It also leaves the possibility open that you could do other things afterwards that are not on the list, if you have time.
If you have a meeting scheduled, make the most of it by deciding on not only a start time but also an end time. Also, set an agenda so that there is not a temptation to go over the allotted amount of time. Things can get off track quickly, so an agenda can help you to stay focused and get what you need out of the meeting. Other attendees are sure to appreciate these things, too.
Did you know that taking an actual break for lunch, dinner, or a snack can help you to get more done during your “shift” than eating at your desk? Taking a break clears your mind, and actually getting up from your desk gets your body moving which can bring back your energy. We all know that we work better when we have more energy. What’s more, eating a real meal (or even just a sandwich) on a real plate at a real table feels good. When you feel like you have enjoyed something nice for yourself, you are happier and more productive.
