What’s your idea of an ideal weekend getaway? Going some place with great weather, nice people and gorgeous scenery?
Those are three qualities that make Lake Lure a popular weekend retreat for many travelers. Lake Lure is nestled between the Piedmont region and Appalachian Mountains in the western part of North Carolina and offers all the charming qualities of a quaint southern town.
What’s more, Lake Lure’s location provides visitors with access to some of the most awe-inspiring views in the country. The man-made lake provides more than 20 miles of shoreline where you can look out (and photograph) picturesque cobalt blue waters surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges.
The lake itself is a big draw for nature lovers whose passion is outdoor recreational activities. Lake Lure is a haven for water skiers, tour boats, and fishermen, but it also attracts those who love to explore the outdoors from thousands of feet above sea level. Hikers from across the state flock to nearby Chimney Rock Park to scale some of the region’s most interesting rock formations. The park spans more than 1,000 acres and overlooks Hickory Nut Gorge, which is the natural gorge that was formed by the Rocky Broad River as it weaved its way down to what is now Lake Lure. The river got its name because there is a line of massive boulders that creates a path down the mountain.
While some visitors travel to Lake Lure to take in the spectacular views and others to participate in the myriad of outdoor activities available in and around the lake, I look at the area as a peaceful retreat where you can relax and unwind without feeling guilty. There’s a sense of calm that envelops the area. Lake Lure is peaceful and quiet. It’s void of traffic jams, pushy pedestrians and crazed commuters. It’s a place where visitors come to rest and rejuvenate their spirit and once you spend a few minutes near the lake you’ll understand why.
Take a stroll through town and you may also get the feeling that you’ve seen the area before… if you are a movie buff you might have. Besides it’s fabulous views and friendly folks, Lake Lure is perhaps best known for being the real-life setting of the hit 1980s movie, “Dirty Dancing.”
