Snacking and Food When You Work From Home

Do you find the refrigerator and close proximity of the kitchen to be too much of a temptation when you are working from home? I definitely drink more coffee when I’m working from home than when I am out and about or working from someplace else. But, overall, I think I eat better at home than I do when I’m working elsewhere. Regardless, the temptation of kitchen and food can be a real issue when your office and business are at home…

For me, knowing that I can make a fresh salad or eat some of last night’s leftovers without much effort inspires me to stay focused and eat better at home. For some reason, just knowing my choices are limited when I am working from a client’s location or at other non-home work locations causes me to fuss and be more likely to choose fast food or quick snacks. However, a friend of mine who also runs a home-based business says she’s gained about fifteen pounds since she started working from home—just because the kitchen is so close to where she’s working!

I also find when I’m working from home that I have less distraction (when my kids aren’t home and the cats behave) and I can stay focused on work for longer periods of time. Since I’m someone who has a tendency to snack and munch when I’m bored or distracted—this keeps me from thinking about food as much as when I’m working in a more “traditional” setting. For me, meetings are the worst time for snacking temptation! Besides my propensity to get bored at meetings, the mere fact that they seem someone “social” with all those other bodies, makes me feel like I should be munching and snacking on something!

I’d love to hear from all of you other home-business gurus—how do you deal with snacking and food when you’re working from home? Or, is it even an issue for you (or a beckoning temptation?)
