Many moms wonder how they can sneak a bit of “me” time into their busy day. For me, I find most days to be a juggling act. I cringe when people say that it should be easier for me since I “don’t work”. It’s sad that some people think the life of a writer is all glitz and glamour and we’re sitting around in our pajamas all day, sipping coffee and reading steamy romance novels. Or watching Oprah. Okay, I do work in my pajamas from time to time, but that’s not the point. I probably “work” more hours than some people who work outside the home. I don’t get vacation, sick or holidays off. When the kids were home last week for the Martin Luther King Holiday, I had a deadline to meet so I ended up working at least four hours that morning. Most of the time I work into the wee hours of the morning. And let’s not forget the added pressure of not receiving a steady paycheck. It’s not something that I chose to do, writing is something that I have to do.
Even with all the hours I work, there are ways to sneak a little “me” time into my week. If I can find some time each day that’s great, but I’m content with a few days a week for now. If you are looking for ways to sneak some “me” time into your day, here’s three ways that have worked for me.
(1) Exercise, especially walking
Not only will you get in shape but you will have 30 minutes to an hour to yourself. When I walk, I find my head clears up and I am able to think. I always take along my camera and a little notebook. You never know when inspiration will strike or what photo opportunities will present itself.
(2) Take a day off
I try to take each Thursday off. Sometimes I end up working in the evening but I always try to save the mornings just for me. Last week I went to Wal-mart and got my hair cut. Just sitting there having someone else pamper me lifted my spirits. And I went crazy and cut it all off, so I have this little short pixie cut that’s easy to manage. This gives me more time during the day since I don’t have to worry about hot curling and all that jazz. If you have a day job, save some of your vacation time so that you can take a day off throughout the year and use that time just for yourself. If you have a spouse or family or friends who can watch your kids on the weekend, take advantage of a few hours of me time whenever you can.
(3) If all else fails, lock yourself in the bathroom
This is my old standby. When I need some alone time, I go in the bathroom and lock the door. Sometimes just a few minutes is all I need to refresh myself. I’ve even noticed lately that Tyler’s cries of, “What are you doing in there?”, can’t spoil my alone time. I decide in advance how long I am going to stay (at least 5 minutes) and then I stay there until my time is up!
