Social Security Lists Top Baby Names 2022

The U.S. Social Security Administration provided a list of the top baby names for a given year. The list is separated into “Male Name” and “Female Name”. The list of the most popular baby names for 2022 has been released! 

Top 2022 Male Names were:

Liam, Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, William, Henry, Lucas, Benjamin, Theodore

Top 2022 Female Names were:

Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, Evelyn, Luna

KTLA posted a news article titled: “These were California’s most popular baby names in 2022” From the news article:

Twenty years ago, the most common names given to babies born in California were Daniel and Emily, followed by Anthony and Ashley, respectively. That wasn’t the case in 2022, according to the latest data from the Social Security Administration.

Instead, the most popular names were Liam and Olivia, following the national trend.

Olivia has been California’s top girl name since 2019 when it overtook Emma. This is the first year Liam has been at the top of the list after overtaking Noah, despite being the most popular boy’s name in the U.S. since 2017.

For girls’ names, very little has changed in the rankings for California. According to SSA, Sofia (not to be confused with No. 5’s Sophia) was slightly more popular than Amelia in 2022 than in 2021.

The top ten girls names in California in 2022 were:

Olivia, Emma, Camila, Mia, Sophia, Isabella, Amelia, Luna, Sofia, Gianna

Liam and Noah weren’t the only boys’ names to shuffle rankings in California. Oliver gained one spot, according to SSA, while Benjamin fell two places. Two names, Alexander and Daniel, dropped out of the top 10 while two new names, Santiago and Ezekiel, climbed in popularity.

Liam, Noah, Mateo, Sebastian, Julian, Oliver, Santiago, Benjamin, Elijah, Ezekiel

Noah, Liam, Mateo, Sebastian, Julian, Benjamin, Oliver, Elijah, Alexander, Daniel

BabyNames.com provided a list of trending baby names for 2023.

Top 20 Girls Names for 2023:

The “V” sound in girl’s names is still holding strong with names like Violet, Ivy, Ava, Olivia, Evelyn, Maeve, and Genevieve (with two)! “Grandma” names are dropping off slightly with more other-worldly names like Aurora, Aria, and Luna replacing them.

Top 20 Boys Names for 2023:

We are seeing Atlas rising fast, perhaps as an alternative to Atticus which had been trending in the past 5-8 years. Irish/Celtic names like Finn, Declan and Liam are still on the top twenty, but losing a bit of popularity. Expect names of gods and strength to rise on the charts like Atlas and Apollo!
