Sock Bunnies

If you’ve got a pile (or at my house, a mountain) of mismatched socks, you’ve got what you need to make one of these cute sock bunnies.

I wrote a book a while back, Best Friends Forever, with 199 ideas for Friendship Crafts, and these sock bunnies ended up being the most popular project in the book. I think it’s because they have all the appeal of a stuffed animal, yet they require no sewing and you have everything you need to make one in your house right now.

You will need:

1 white sock

1 colored sock

Scissors

Unpopped popcorn or rice

Rubber bands

Black and pink felt

Needle and black thread

Glue

1. Fill the white sock with popcorn or rice up to the heel.

2. Wrap the rubber band tightly around the sock above the popcorn or rice.

3. Hold the sock above the rubber band straight up. Cut down the middle, stopping about a half-inch above the rubber band. these are the rabbit’s ears. If they are too long, you can trim them and/or round off the edges if you want.

4. Cut the top off the colored sock just above the heel.

5. To make the hat, wrap a rubber band around the cut-off end of the sock, about an inch from the cut edge. Cut the fabric above the rubber band into a fringe to make a pom-pom top for the hat.

6. Put the hat on the bunny. Glue a button or charm to the hat if you want.

7. Cut a little pink nose and eyes from the felt. Glue them in place.

8. Thread the needle with the black thread and double it. Send the needle in and out under the bunny’s nose to make whiskers. Cut the thread and either tie the whiskers in a knot at their base or put a little dab of glue at their base to keep them in place.
