You don’t have to spend as much on hardware as you do on your window treatments to create a custom look. You can use inexpensive, simple to install materials, and dress them up with creative touches.
Sports Themes
Would your little boy or girl love a sports themed room? Your inspiration can begin with the curtain rods. It may sound strange, but think about it. What child wouldn’t think real baseballs instead of finials is cool? Simply drill holes into the side two baseballs and place the balls on each end of a dowel rod. You can paint the dowel rod blue or red for contrast, or white to blend. Add a little glue to hold the balls in place, and you have a themed curtain rod.
For easy hanging, screw two large hook mugs into the wall or window frame near the top corners of the window, and hang the rod from them. You can create similar themes using miniature soccer balls, footballs, basketballs, or even Matchbox cars.
Feminine Touches
If your little princess is all about glamour, find some unique costume jewelry pieces at a garage sale or thrift store. Some of the older designs feature huge faux-jeweled earrings that would make perfect end pieces for a slim dowel rod.
You can also use small wood cutouts from a craft store shaped like hearts, flowers, or stars. Paint them anyway you like, add trim or lace if desired and glue them onto the ends of the rod. For larger pieces, also add a finishing nail to keep them in place. You can paint the rod to match if you like, or wrap it in lace.
Dowel rods are cheap and easy to find and you can add almost anything you can think of for end pieces to hold the curtains in place. Try paintbrushes for your little artist, children’s sunglasses for a beach theme, or tiny ballet shoes for your little dancer. Use your imagination. You can also make curtains from fabric in a coordinating print to add to the theme.
